Communication with Patient with Alzheimer's

Mr. Singh has been suffering from Alzheimer's which affects the speaking ability of the individual and also negatively affects the memory and cognitive abilities (Swan et al., 2018, p. 837). Based on cognitive impairment, effective communication strategies are needed to be used for better exchange of information. In order to communicate with Mr. Singh, I will use short and simple sentences and incorporate non-verbal cues for example, facial expressions, and kind touches to build a trusting relationship with him (Swan et al., 2018, p. 837). Patients with Alzheimer's tend to experience frustration (Swan et al., 2018, p. 837) however, the use of friendly facial expressions and simple sentences will be helpful to reduce frustration. During the communication, I will avoid correcting with Mr. Singh to prevent any confusion. Similarly, I will talk slowly in a polite manner. Similarly, while communicating the patient must be provided with ample time to respond (Swan et al., 2018, p. 837). I will incorporate this aspect and acknowledge the feelings and emotions of the patient. I believe that these aspects will challenge the communication gap and ensure a better exchange of information.

Denture-Related Sores

The presence of sores in the gumline suggests the symptom of denture-related stomatitis. This issue is very common among the elders because of poor oral hygiene. Denture-related stomatitis is characterized by the appearance of erythema areas as well as inflammation in palatal mucosa because of denture. 15% to 75% of denture wearers tend to experience this health condition and a small percentage of patients report itching, pain, or burning sensation (Rodriguez-Archilla & Garcia-Galan, 2020, p. 37). Denture-related stomatitis increases the risk of fungal infection due to this, prompt intervention is needed. The next step is to collaborate with the dental team and offer Mr. Singh antiseptic solutions to rinse his mouth. Similarly, Mr. Singh will be provided with information about oral hygiene and oral hygiene will be integrated into the care plan. I will continually monitor the symptoms of denture-related stomatitis to prevent any further complications.
