How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words? We Measured It

1,000 words is about 3 pages double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins, and about 1.5 pages single-spaced. Most sites say 4 pages. We tested it, and here is why the numbers differ.

Words to pages: measured results

We set 250 to 5,000 words of real academic text in Word format on US Letter paper with 1-inch margins and 0.5-inch paragraph indents, then counted the pages. Each figure is the average of five different text samples.

4,00011.913.010.68.85.9
5,00014.716.113.110.97.3

Figures are pages filled, so 2.9 means the text runs most of the way down page 3.

Two things that surprise people:

  • Arial takes about 10% more pages than Times New Roman at the same size. If your assignment sets a page minimum and lets you choose the font, that difference is more than a full page on a 4,000-word paper.
  • Word's default settings (Calibri 11, 1.08 line spacing, space after each paragraph) land almost exactly on single-spaced Times New Roman: 1,000 words came out at 1.5 pages in both. If you never changed the defaults, read the single-spaced column.

Why other sites say 1,000 words is 4 pages

The common rule of "250 words per double-spaced page" comes from typewriter-era manuscripts set in a fixed-width font like Courier, where every letter takes the same space. We tested Courier New 12 pt double-spaced too. It averaged about 230 words per page, so the old rule holds for Courier.

Proportional fonts such as Times New Roman give narrow letters less room, so more words fit on a line. In our tests, a double-spaced Times New Roman page held about 340 words.

Use this when the assignment gives a page count and you want a word target.

These counts are for body text only. Title pages, reference lists and headings are extra.

What moves the count, and by how much

We changed one setting at a time and measured the effect on 1,000 words in Times New Roman, double-spaced.

ChangeEffect on 1,000 words
Double spacing to single spacing1.5 fewer pages
Double spacing to 1.5 spacing0.8 fewer pages
Times New Roman to Arial0.3 more pages
Your subject and vocabulary (longer, technical words)up to 0.4 more pages
Short paragraphs (60 words) instead of long ones (250 words)0.4 more pages
A4 paper instead of US Letter0.1 fewer pages

The subject effect is the one nobody mentions. Our five samples used the same font and settings, yet 1,000 words ranged from 2.8 to 3.3 pages, because some passages used longer words. A nursing or engineering paper full of terms like "pharmacokinetic" or "thermodynamic" will run longer than an English essay of the same word count.

Paragraph length matters because the last line of every paragraph is usually only part-full, and every new paragraph starts with an indent. More paragraphs means more partly empty lines.

Formatting that adds pages without adding words

  • MLA: no title page, but the name, instructor, course and date lines plus the title take about 5 double-spaced lines on page 1, roughly a fifth of a page. Works Cited starts on a new page.
  • APA 7 student paper: a separate title page, and the reference list starts on its own page. A 1,000-word APA paper with 6 references is usually 5 pages in total: title page, 3 pages of text, and 1 page of references.

Rubrics differ on whether the title page and references count toward a page limit, so check before you write.

How long it takes to read or present

Useful for presentations, speeches and timed readings. Averages are from a review of 190 reading studies (Brysbaert, 2019): 238 words per minute reading silently, 183 words per minute reading aloud.

WordsReading silentlyReading aloud or presenting
500about 2 minutesabout 3 minutes
1,000about 4 minutesabout 5.5 minutes
1,500about 6 minutesabout 8 minutes
2,000about 8.5 minutesabout 11 minutes
3,000about 12.5 minutesabout 16.5 minutes

For a 5-minute presentation, write about 900 words. For 10 minutes, about 1,800.

How many paragraphs is 1,000 words?

If your paragraphs run 100 to 200 words, 1,000 words is 5 to 10 paragraphs. A standard five-paragraph essay at 1,000 words gives you about 200 words per paragraph, with a shorter introduction and conclusion and longer body paragraphs.

How we measured

Text samples came from academic writing in the Brown Corpus (average word length 5.1 letters). Documents were built in .docx format with Word-compatible fonts that have the same letter widths as Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri and Courier New, then rendered to PDF to count pages and lines. Each result is the average of five different 5,000-word passages. Your own page count can differ slightly with headings, quotes, lists and tables.
